With the price of Notebook computers (a.k.a laptop, see fun
fact below) coming down over the last few years, more and more people are
starting to use them as replacements for their desktop computers, but does this
mean that a notebook is the right choice for you?

Fun Fact – Why are laptops called notebooks? Computer manufacturers
started referring laptops as notebooks after a lawsuit in which a user sued one
of the manufacturers due to their lap being burnt from faulty laptop that
overheated.

I have broken down the general questions you should be asking
yourself when deciding which choice is best for you.

1.
Mobility Winner = Notebook

This one is quite simple really, if you plan on moving around a
lot with your computer then a notebook is the obvious choice for you.

2.
Performance – Winner = Desktop

Generally, a desktop computer will outperform a notebook of
equivalent specifications. This basically comes down to architecture. Notebooks
are designed to be compact, therefore so are the parts inside them. So how does
smaller parts equal slower performance? I will use the CPU as an example and
compare the Intel i5 2500s desktop CPU versus the Intel i5 2520M notebook CPU.
Both are advertised as Intel i5 CPU’s with 2.5GHz clock speed however the 2500s
has twice the cores and twice the cache.

3.
Servicing & Upgradability Winner = Desktop

When it comes to servicing and upgrading, it is a lot easier, and
cheaper to do so on a desktop computer. Easier, because desktop computers
generally have more room inside to work with making parts more accessible. For
notebooks, upgrading is also limited by the amount of expansion slots they have
available (if any) and the fact that many parts are fixed to the motherboard
and cannot be replaced, which can also add to the cost of a repair if it needs
to be replaced. Desktop computers are also cheaper to service and upgrade
because parts are more readily available, as there is already a market out
there for IT professionals and computer enthusiasts who build their own
computer systems. More demand, lower prices!

4.
Aesthetics Winner = Notebook

Let’s face it, laptops are sexy when compared to their bulkier
counterparts. Don’t get me wrong, big can also be beautiful, like a great big
shiny Mac truck, but when compared to the sleek and slender lines of a Ferrari
sports car, the winner is clear as day.

5.
Ergonomics Winner = Desktop

The things that make notebooks so great can be one of their
biggest downfalls. Ever used a laptop for hours on the bed? It’s great at
first, but after a while you get yourself a stiff neck. As its name suggest, a
desktop is designed to be setup on a desk top which promotes us to sit in a
more ergonomic upright position. Desktop computers also generally have a full
sized keyboard and mouse and has it is easier to use ergonomic aids such as gel
pads and monitor stands.
